NEW JERSEY PREDATOR CONTROL

There was a time in the state of New Jersey that Predator Control consisted of a fox killing some chickens, or raccoons raiding the henhouse. Today the garden state is far from that scenario. The eastern coyote has moved into New Jersey. The coyote does very well in New Jersey’s rich wildlife habitat. Small game, deer, turkey along with pets like dogs and cats are in abundance and easily preyed on. Also New Jersey with its livestock that is easily obtainable finishes off all the coyote needs. The coyote can live right within housing developments, our farmlands, and yes even our industrial parks. They are very seldom seen yet the numbers are high. Matter of fact most people seeing that dark shadow running through the yard or crossing the road in front of them may think it is a pet that got loose never noticing the big bushy tail flowing behind the running coyote.
The red fox has always been in the state of New Jersey. Feeding on the rabbits, small game, songbirds and yes even cats. The red fox was happy to stay out in the farmlands and natural areas in good numbers; that is until the coyote moved and the little red fox moved into the housing developments and towns right up against the house. The fox learned that being up near people there are food sources like chipmunks, rabbits, voles, shrews and many other little creatures that can be readily found and eaten. The red fox found that porches, rock fences and brushy fence lines in between yards are great places to have their young. Some of the best fox habitat can be found in places like Haddonfield, Cherry Hill, Voorhees, Mount Laurel, and Princeton. Yes, these places mentioned support very large populations of red fox.
The gray fox, most people do not even realize this fox is around and when seen the average person thinks it is a cross fox of some sort. Yet this is the true resident of New Jersey. This little fox is native to New Jersey before the pilgrims came. It too can be found right up against the house, industrial parks and farmlands. The gray fox is more cat like in its habits and behavior. It also preys on small game and critters that can be found around the home and then just like the red fox up against houses and structures.
Over the past few years these Predators have started to cause a lot of damage and problems. The coyote and red fox can and will prey on sheep and goats. The coyote is starting to cause the same problems in the east as they do out west to cattle and young horses. The gray fox although not known to cause damage to larger livestock will in fact kill chickens, ducks, rabbits and young pigs and whatever else they can get to.
